Iraq attacks kill Shiites in two Baghdad districts

More than 20 Shiites have been killed in separate bomb explosions carried out in the Iraqi capital. The three attacks occurred as Shiites were celebrating one of their religious holidays.

Three explosions went off in Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad on Monday, all within an hour of each other.

At least two of the attacks were carried out using suicide car bombs and occurred in the districts of Kadhimiyah and Sadr City as people were distributing sweets for Eid al-Ghadir, a religious holiday which is observed by Shiite Muslims.

Police in the Iraqi capital say at least 22 people were killed in the attacks.

The bombs went during a busy time between 6 and 8 p.m..

According to UN figures, over 1,000 people were killed in September in such attacks. A count by the news agency AFP puts the toll at over 350 for this month so far.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for Monday's attacks.
