In pictures: Hosts Brazil settle for fourth after Dutch World Cup thrashing
A heavy defeat at the hands of the Dutch means Brazil have had to settle for fourth place. Here are the best moments from the World Cup's penultimate day in pictures.
A chance at redemption
After their historic 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semifinals, Saturday's third place match was a chance for the hosts earn at least a little redemption. Instead, it was the Netherlands who leave Brazil with a medal after their 3-0 victory.
Nightmare start
With captain Thiago Silva back in the lineup, Brazil fans expected a much tighter defense. In a moment of painful irony, it was the man with the armband who brought down Arjen Robben in the box, conceding a penalty not three minutes into the match.
Dutch go ahead
Captain Robin van Persie converted the spot kick with confidence. It took Brazil just three minutes to concede, even faster than in their dismantling at the hands of Germany.
And another!
Daley Blind's effort from the top of the area in the 16th minute doubled the Dutch lead. Brazil's defense gave the Netherlands defender far too much time to pick out his shot, but replays also showed the cross to set up the goal was from an offside position.
Little to do
Once again, Brazil looked flat going forward without their star man Neymar. Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen was left with little to do in the match. He faced just two shots on goal the entire game.
One more for good measure
In the match's final moments, PSV midfielder Giorgio Wijnaldum added a third for the Oranje. It was a deserved goal for the Netherlands, who were dominant all evening.
Time for a rethink
Two straight heavy defeats for the Brazilians on the game's biggest stage has left the country reeling. It's time for a football rethink for Brazil, with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari likely on his way out.
