Peyton Manning has broken Brett Favre's all-time record for touchdown passes, as his team won comfortably against the San Francisco 49ers in Denver on Sunday.

Manning went into the game needing three touchdown throws to beat the record of 508 established by Favre before he retired after the 2010 season.

In the end, Manning had done it by halftime, and added on a fourth TD early in the third quarter to stretch his record to 510 career touchdown passes.

"It was a special night," Manning said after the game. "It's one I'll always remember."

The five-time NFL Most Valuable Player started the game strongly, completing touchdown passes on three of Denver's first four drives.

His short throw to Demaryius Thomas ended up being the pass that broke the record with just over three minutes to play in the second quarter.

Shortly thereafter, Favre congratulated Manning on Twitter for his achievement.

"Well deserved Peyton. Congratulations on breaking my record. #Onto600," he wrote.

After the game Manning said he planned to give Favre a call in the next few days to thank him for his best wishes, but otherwise downplayed his achievement.

"I was glad it was here in Denver. The fact we won the game certainly allows you to celebrate with your team. The touchdowns I've thrown have helped us win a lot of games."
