In remote communities and in the developing world, journalists are often lone voices attempting to impart independent and impartial news and information. Journalists face many risks and challenges in the course of their work, including threats and attacks for reporting on sensitive topics, such as human rights violations.

The German Development Media Awards, an initiative from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Deutsche Welle (DW), honor journalists around the world who have overcome such challenges in their dedication to bring important human rights and development issues to light. This year, prizes were granted to journalists from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Germany.
