October 24, 2014

German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung has reported that imprisoned former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness could start coaching Bayern's youth at the end of January - if he is granted parole.

Uli Hoeness is expected to start work with Bayern Munich's youth academy at the start of 2015 as a prisoner on day release, report German newspaper "Sueddeutsche Zeitung" (SZ), citing club sources.

"An old companion said there was enough work to be done in the youth academy, and that it was a perfect fit for Hoeness," wrote SZ. Since Thomas Müller and Holger Badstuber, no youth players at Bayern Munich have made the leap from first team to the Germany squad. On top of that, the club are keen to set up an academy for youth teams.

No managerial position

Imprisoned at the Landsberg am Lech correctional facility since June, Hoeness has been serving a three-and-a-half year sentence because of tax evasion. The 62-year-old is expected to receive parole soon, which would mean he would only have to return to prison at night.

The requirements for this are as follows: no family issues, no danger of relapse - and a job. Hoeness has made up his mind where he will work at Bayern, cite SZ. The former Bayern player isn't after a managerial position though, and is also not keen on getting involved in any current business.

Both the judicial authorities and Hoeness' lawyer, Steffen Ufer, declined to make a statement. "Uli Hoeness does not wish to comment on any speculation at the moment," said Ufer to SZ.

As a result of the tax scandal, Hoeness stepped down from his managerial positions at Bayern. At the general assembly on May 2, he revealed that he would like to return to Bayern in an official position once he had served his sentence. His successor as club president, Karl Hopfner, has a contract until 2016.
