Borussia Mönchengladbach has confirmed the signing of Hannover midfielder Lars Stindl. The 26-year-old has penned a five-year-deal at Borussia Park and will move at the end of this season.

Stindl has been attracting interest from a host of other Bundesliga clubs, including Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen, but the Foals have won the race to complete the transfer and triggered a release clause in his contract of around three million euros ($3.3 million).

"I have decided not to extend my contract at Hannover, but will join Mönchengladbach in the summer," the midfielder said on his Twitter account. "The two clubs will now deal with the details, but I wanted to lead at this stage to provide clarity."

Stindl signed for Hannover in 2010 from Karlsruhe and became an integral figure in Mirko Slomka's side that qualified for Europe in 2010/11. He would go on to make 154 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals and even succeeded US international Steve Cherundolo as club captain.

Tough decision for Stindl

"Together with you, I look back on an eventful time: In my first year at the Reds, finishing in fourth place and qualifying for Europe, with those noisy European nights in the Europa League," the midfielder wrote in a statement he released on Twitter.

Stindl and Hannover are locked in a relegation battle with two points separating the Reds and the relegation zone. Tayfun Korkut's side hasn't won in 10 matches, losing to Borussia Dortmund at home on the last matchday.

"Until the summer, I'll only be focused on getting points for 96," he added. "We are all highly motivated to free ourselves from the current situation and we'll give our all to survive the drop."

"We had strong competition in our efforts to sign Lars," said Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl. "We are delighted that he has chosen us. He can be used in several midfield positions and has shown as captain of Hannover that he can take responsibility."

Gladbach's Christoph Kramer will return to his parent club Leverkusen in the summer and Stindl has been touted as a replacement for the German World Cup winner. Stindl's contract will keep him at Mönchengladbach until June 2020.
