Hamburg came into the match with a new coach, Joe Zinnbauer, after HSV failed to score a single goal in the first three rounds. And what a task for a Bundesliga debut: a visit from Bayern Munich.

Pep Guardiola continued his strategy of rotating for rotation's sake, leaving Mario Götze, Lewandowski and Xabi Alonso on the bench, and the squad looked a bit dizzy for it. Bayern dominated possession but failed to truly pressure the Bundesliga's cellar-dweller in the first half, which ended goalless.

Hamburg's Nicolai Müller almost set up a sensation after the restart, poking the ball past Manuel Neuer, but his shot dribbled agonizingly just past the post. Guardiola brought on Alonso, Götze and Lewandowski, but Hamburg sniffed a chance at a point and defended with everything they had.

And they held on, earning an improbable goalless draw against the reigning German champions. Zinnbauer can celebrate a point that must have felt like a win, while Bayern fans will be questioning Guardiola's proclivity to rotate his squad.

Sending-offs galore in Schalke

Schalke had momentum on their side ahead of their match having held Chelsea to a draw in London in their Wednesday Champions League match. It was a welcome result after the Royal Blues' weak start to the Bundesliga season.

But that momentum was history after only a quarter of an hour. Kevin-Price Boateng inadvertently headed on a cross, which Ralf Fährmann could only deflect on the boot of an onrushing Alex Meier, who finished cutely.

Nine minutes later, Boateng was on the receiving end again, as Marco Russ barreled past him and put the Eagles 2-0 up. Schalke were handed a lifeline five minutes before the break when Slobodan Medojevic was somewhat harshly ruled to have handled the ball in the area. Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting casually chipped Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp from the spot to reduce the deficit.

Five minutes into the second half, Choupo-Moting turned provider, thumping in a cross. Julian Draxler snuck past Timothy Chandler to head in the equalizer. But Boateng was sent off after picking up a second yellow an hour from time, dampening the mood in Gelsenkirchen. And Draxler further weakened the hosts, seeing straight red 20 minutes from time for what looked like a revenge foul on Carlos Zambrano. Medojevic did his part to restore a bit of parity, getting sent off with a second yellow card in the dying minutes.

Frankfurt were ultimately unable to break through, and the Royal Blues were happy to settle for a 2-2 draw after a topsy-turvy affair.

Paderborn top the table

Paderborn and Hanover were headed towards a goalless draw, but the underdogs' super-striker Elias Kachunga was in the right place at the right time to put his team into the lead. And Moritz Stoppelkamp went one step further in the dying minutes, bashing in a goal from his own penalty area with Hanover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler up for the corner.

The 2-0 victory gave Paderborn eight points after the first four games and took them to the top of the table - at least temporarily. Stoppelkamp's 83-meter-strike set a new Bundesliga record for the longest-ever goal.

Hoffenheim claimed top spot after beating Stuttgart 2-0 and the heat is on Stuttgart coach Armin Veh after the defeat. Anthony Modeste scored early and Tarik Elyounoussi struck late for the visitors. The defeat drops Stuttgart to the bottom of the table.

Bremen streaked out into the lead in Augsburg with a goal from youngster Davie Selkie after only three minutes, but the hosts then struck back with a goal by Daniel Baier and a penalty by Paul Verhaegh just before the half. Augsburg returned the penalty gift after 56 minutes - Franco di Santo converting the spot kick. 13 minutes from time, Tobias Werner was alert to head in a rebound to restore Augsburg's advantage. And Tim Matvz completed the 4-2 scoreline in the dying seconds.

On Friday evening, Hertha Berlin scraped out a 2-2 draw in Freiburg.

On Sunday, Wolfsburg face Leverkusen in a battle of teams with Champions League ambitions, while Cologne take on their local rivals Mönchengladbach.
