September 29, 2014

The strip of land that once divided east and west Germany is now a conservation area. The watchtowers and fences are gone, allowing hikers to follow the former border while enjoying the landscape.

The old inner German border runs from the Baltic down to where Bavaria, Thüringen and the Czech Republic meet. The 1,400 kilometer-long strip of land used to be off limits to the public, allowing nature to take its course unhindered. A conservation project was set up after the Cold War, called The Green Belt. There are now guided tours along certain stretches of the former no-man’s-land.
