The Greek F-16 fighter jet was participating in a NATO training program at the Los Llanos base near the city of Albacete when it crashed into several other airplanes on the ground Monday. There were at least 10 people killed and 13 others injured, according to the ministry.

"The plane, part of the Tactical Leadership Program of NATO, was carrying out a [training] exercise when during the take-off the plane lost power, crashing into the parking area for planes, crashing into various planes that were parked there," Spain's defense ministry said in a statement.

The Greek plane was involved in a joint exercise as part of a program which also included Belgium, Denmark, France, Britain, Italy, Spain, the United States and Germany.

Heavy smoke could be seen rising from the crash scene and emergency crews were working to put out the blaze.
