G8 Summit in St Petersburg

July 14, 2006

The Group of Eight or G8 summit takes place in Russia for the first time from July 15-17. Leaders from the eight richest industrialized nations -- US, Germany, Japan, Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Russia -- gather in St. Petersburg for the two-day power gathering. The G8 represents just 13.5 percent of the world's population, but two-thirds of global economic power.

This year's summit will be dominated by escalating violence in the Middle East as Israel continues its offensive on Lebanon. But even Iran's nuclear ambitions, North Korea's atomic intransigence, the war in Iraq and energy security are expected to figure prominently on the agenda.
