Djokovic and Murray ease into last 16

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have both progressed to the round of 16 of the French Open in Paris, after both players defeated two of Australia's brightest tennis prospects on Saturday.

World number one Djokovic reached the last 16 stage for the sixth successive year following a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over 19-year-old Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis who is ranked number 84 in the world.

"Thanasi has a lot of talent and strength," said Djokovic after the game. "He is still a teenager and he has plenty of time to do great things."

For the Serbian, the win extends his unbeaten run to 25 games in a row.

Number three tournament seed Murray, a two-time quarterfinalist, secured a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory over 20-year-old Aussie Nick Kyrgios on Saturday.

Kokkinakis' compatriot Kyrgios announced himself on the tennis circuit, beating Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon last year and rising to 30th in the world this year.

"At the beginning he was serving big, over 200 kilometers an hour, and then slowed to 170, 180, and not really going for aces," said Murray. "He normally serves a bunch of aces."

"The rest of the match he was still hitting huge shots," the Scot added.

Murray, who won on clay in Madrid, will look to reach the quarterfinals next week when he takes on Jeremy Chardy of France.

On course for a mouth-watering quarterfinal duel with number one seed Djokovic, Spain's Rafael Nadal beat Andrey Kuznetsov, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the Last 16.

The Spaniard is seeking his 10th French Open championship and will face American Jack Sock after he beat 18-year-old Croat Borna Coric. US Open winner Marin Cilic takes on David Ferrer in Monday's set of Last 16 encounters.

Wimbledon champ finds gear

On the women's side of the draw, French Open fourth-seed Petra Kvitova has powered into the Last 16, taking just 58 minutes to defeat Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3, 6-2.

"I think it was for sure the best match which I played here so far, so I'm really glad for it," said the Czech, whose next round clash will be against Swiss player Timea Bacsinszky.

"I'm glad that I didn't forget many things from my game and it's still there," said Kvitova. "I felt better today, for sure. It's the third round which I didn't pass here last year, so I was really motivated by it."

Kvitova's best performance at the French Open so far was a semifinal spot in 2012 with her success generally reserved for Wimbledon, the third of the Grand Slam's on the tennis calendar.

Meanwhile, Germany's Andrea Petkovic was dumped out by Italian Sara Errani 6-3, 6-3. The 27-year-old was a semifinalist at Roland Garros last year, but her 2015 has been marked with ups-and-downs having gone out in the first round at the Australian Open. In contrast, compatriot Julia Görges remains in the tournament, beating Irina Falconi from the US in straight sets.
