Ski jumping in Germany

Competition in the 61st Four Hills ski jumping tournament got under way this afternoon at Oberstdorf. Last year's winner Gregor Schlierenzauer started as favorite to repeat his win. There are nine German challengers.

Norwegian, Anders Jacobsen took the first victory in the Four Hills ski jumping tournament on Sunday with 308.6 points ahead of Schlierenzauer on 297.0 points for the two jumps of the afternoon. German Severin Freund took a surprise third place with 290.8 points.

Jacobsen topped the list of qualifiers on Saturday going into today's first full day of competition, with a distance of 133.5 metres. His good style marks from the judges and high wind and gate compensation factors gave him a total of 143.2 points.

"I'm really very satisfied with my jumps and my result," Jacobsen said, suggesting his chances in the competition were those of a "dangerous outsider."

Schlierenzauer, who had already pre-qualified for Sunday's competition, produced the highest score in the qualifying tournament with 149.6 points. The 22-year-old Austrian said he was happy with the result.

Michael Neumayer is the best placed of the nine German qualifiers in this year's competition. He was placed ninth in Sunday's competition.

The Four Hills is in Oberstdorf today, goes to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for new year's day, then on to Innsbruck and Bischofshofen in Austria where it finishes on January 6.

The tournament is made up of four Ski Jumping World Cup events and has taken place in Germany and Austria each year since 1952. Germany has the most victories with sixteen - eleven of which were pre-1989.
