Tuesday's shooting, in which two farmers and two police officers were killed, occurred in a rural area of China's northern Hebei province, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

The suspected killer was a 55-year-old man, Liu Shuangrui, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, Xinhua said.

Liu went on a rampage with a double-barreled shotgun in his village of Xishibao in Suning county, first killing two fellow villagers, then two police officers, according to the Xinhua report.

A police statement said Liu had later been shot and killed.

Two other police officers were among the five people injured, the statement said.

The shooting was a rare example of gun violence in China, where firearms and gun ownership are closely controlled.
