In the Blasewitz district of Dresden, romantic old gas street lamps have been replaced with modern lighting masts. As in other German cities, citizens are quarreling with local politicians about heritage preservation versus street illumination. On the one hand, the gas lamps are dim, high-maintenance energy guzzlers. On the other, they're both historically valuable and beautiful.
