New Year's Eve usually means fireworks. But there's one German tradition that takes the fire out of the sky and puts it right on the kitchen counter. Known as Feuerzangenbowle ("Fire tong punch"), it's a drink made with red wine, spices, rum and healthy doses of sugar and flame. First, the wine and spices are combined in a bowl with the sugar suspended above them. Then the sugar is drenched in rum before being burned and slowly dripping down into the wine mixture. The result is as sweet as it is potent. Maybe that explains why Feuerzangenbowle is so popular during the holidays - one too many cups, and you may just need the next day off from work!
