Scaffold collapse in Vietnam

A scaffold has collapsed in Vietnam, killing at least 14 construction workers. Some 40 workers were erecting part of a habor seawall. Some victims are feared to be still trapped in rubble.

The industrial accident in Vietnam's Vung Ang industrial zone on Thursday also left dozens of people hurt, including 15 with serious injuries, according to the General Hospital in Ha Tinh province.

Those hurt were Vietnamese subcontractors hired to build the breakwater. The zone includes a large steel complex being built for a Taiwanese company, Formosa Plastics Corp..

One of the survivors, Dinh Ninh Dan, 27, said the scaffolding had shaken several times before it "suddenly collapsed." It had stood about 20 meters (65 feet) high.

"People were screaming, calling for help from the rubble," he said. "I was lucky to survive."

The zone was the scene of an anti-China protest in May last year following China's deployment of an oil rig in disputed waters of the South China Sea.
