Asylum in the Church - A Berlin Pastor Paves the Way

https://p.dw.com/p/1E0Gl

More and more people are being forced to flee their countries as a result of war, expulsion and persecution. Those who manage to reach Germany are often turned away and deported. Pastor Jürgen Quandt, who founded the organization Asylum in the Church in 1983, believes that this is unjust. Since Palestinian families afraid of being returned to war-torn Lebanon sought refuge in his church in the 1980s, this Lutheran clergyman has been helping refugees. With like-minded people he founded the association Asylum in the Church. It provides legal advice and sanctuary to those who need it. For the past thirty years Pastor Quandt has been politically active - and he has many success stories to tell. Without his help, hundreds of refugees would have been repatriated and their lives put at risk. Our report tells the story of the 70-year-old pastor’s special mission and explores the history of church asylum in Germany.
