Treble winners Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg have captured a historic treble after winning the Women's Champions League final, ending Lyon's two-year reign as the trophy holders. A penalty from Martina Müller proved to be the decider.

Wolfsburg shocked Lyon 1-0 Thursday night in the final at Stamford Bridge in London, to capture their first ever Champions League title.

It was always going to be a challenge to beat Lyon, who have appeared in the last four Champions League finals and won 35 out of 36 matches in all competitions this season.

After playing to a scoreless first half, Wolfsburg were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute when Laura Georges handled the ball in the area. Martina Müller confidently finished the spot-kick, beating goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi.

Lyon dominated for much of the match, but were unable to get on the scoresheet. Müller's penalty proved to be the match's only goal and it finished 1-0.

Treble season

"This is a dream. It can't get any better. This team has achieved an unbelievable amount of what we want to be as Wolfsburg," said the club's sports director, Thomas Röttgermann.

It was the third trophy of the season for Coach Ralf Kellermann's team. Wolfsburg won the German Cup final 3-2 against Turbine Potsdam Sunday and also took home the league title.

"The Champions League victory is the culmination of Wolfsburg's remarkable season," said Germany's women's national team coach Silvia Neid. "If you can succeed against a top international team like Lyon you've earned the highest recognition."

The victory marks the end of a 95-game unbeaten streak for Lyon. The French power had won the last two previous Champions League finals against Turbine Potsdam and FFC Frankfurt.

Germany's Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich will contest the men's Champions League final Saturday, also in London at Wembley Stadium.
