TT Elections in Iran: a vote to take seriously? - je 14.03.2008 10

Michael BärMarch 14, 2008

Iranian's are voting in parliamentary elections today. Some 44 million people are eligible to vote, but they have little incentive to do so as the candidate lists have been stacked in the government's favor. Reform-minded MPs will be lucky if they manage to hold on to the 40 or so seats they currently control in the 290 seat assembly. But that doesn't mean that the Iranian government can count on the unanimous support of the people. While some are enjoying a life of prosperity, many others are angry that the government hasn't done more to improve economic and social conditions.
