Treaty of Maastricht

The humble city of Maastricht, the Netherlands, played host to one of the most major treaty signings in EU history in December 1991. The treaty set its sights on establishing economic and monetary union among the 15 members, adding another dimension to European integration. It also envisaged, for the first time, a common foreign and defense policy.
