The Rhine River still harbors dangerous bacteria, despite cleanup efforts

Massive cleanup efforts undertaken over the last few decades have led to a dramatic improvement in the Rhine's water quality, but it's still a bad idea to wade in.

Heavy industry and a dense population historically made the Rhine one of Europe's most polluted rivers. The chemicals have been cleaned up, but it's the E. coli and Giardia you have to worry about.
