Spain: Supporting Diversity

DW-WORLD.DE: Who will be coming from Spain for the World Cup?

Carlos Ferreyra Nunez: I will be coordinating the Spanish Fan Embassy. We have a problem with racism in Spanish soccer, but we are not a racist people. So we will be bringing embassy fans based on diversity -- an embassy constituted of fans from ethnic minorities, of elderly people, young people, disabled people, and also people from diverse sexual orientations, lesbians, gays and transsexuals. We want to show that Spain is a truly diverse and European society.

I also think that there will be many immigrants from Africa and Latin America who will be coming to Germany for the World Cup. Some of them are even selling their homes to finance their tickets.

How many Spaniards will be in the stadiums?

It is hard to say. Spain has only received 600 fan tickets so far. But we have got tickets from other sources for the embassy, about 300 tickets, so that we can put this diverse group together.

Will Spain make it to the semi-finals?

We will be in the quarter-finals certainly. I think we will be among the top six qualifying teams.

Which team do you support at home?

I live in Madrid, and there are two teams in Madrid, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Who do you think I support? Atletico.
