World number two Garbine Muruguza has been knocked out of Wimbledon, losing in straight sets to world number 124 Jana Cepelova.

The French Open champion and last year’s beaten finalist at Wimbledon made 22 unforced errors as she was soundly beaten by the Slovakian in less than an hour. The final score was 6-3, 6-2.

The defeat is a huge setback for the Spaniard, whose stock was rising following her maiden Grand Slam title less than a month ago.

Cepelova has equaled her best showing at a Grand Slam by getting to the third round. But this was hardly her first big victory. At Wimbledon last year, she knocked out third-seeded Simona Halep in the first round. And at Charleston, South Carolina, in 2014, Cepelova defeated top-ranked Serena Williams.

There was also a big victory for Germany’s former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki, who dispatched fourth seed Samantha Stosur, 6-4 6-2.

Lisicki reached the Wimbledon final in 2013 but has struggled with injury and failed to match that achievement in any major since, sinking to number 81 in the world.

But a powerful, dominant performance by Lisicki, whose hard-hitting style suits the Wimbledon grass, left Australian Stosur with no answers as Lisicki claimed her first back-to-back victories in four months to reach the third round.

Fourth-seeded German Angelique Kerber also advanced with a 6-1 6-4 win over Varvara Lepchenko, while number five seed Halep beat Francesca Schiavone 6-1 6-1

Home favorite Andy Murray cruised to victory over Yen-Hsun Lu, claiming 31 winners on his way to a 6-3 6-2 6-1 victory that sees him through to the third round..

The 2013 champion and second seed didn’t start particularly well, but found his rhythm in the second set and ran out a comfortable winner.

“The first set was tough,” Murray said. “I went down a break early and there were a lot of close games. I settled down before the end of the second and in the third I started to hit the ball a lot better. I could feel the rain coming and it was getting dark, but thankfully I had a decent lead and it’s good to get the job done.”

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, David Ferrer suffered a shock second-round defeat at the hands of unseeded Frenchman and world number 51 Nicolas Mahut, who reaches the third round for only the second time following a 6-1 6-4 6-3 win.

Earlier, five-time champion Venus Williams, 36 and the oldest player in the women’s draw, led a group of Americans picking up victories as the tournament scrambled to get back on schedule after two days of bad weather. American men's winners included John Isner, Sam Querrey, Donald Young, Jack Sock and Steve Johnson. Joining Williams among the women's winners were Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys and Julia Boserup.
