German music awards ceremony

The stars of Germany's music scene came together for the annual awards ceremony in Berlin to recognize the industry's best talent. The old mainstays of German-language rock music dominated the event.

The veterans of Germany's rock music scene stole the show on Thursday at the Echos, the country's most important music awards ceremony.

The 65-year-old Udo Lindenberg, who has been a mainstay of German-language rock music since the 1970s, won Best National Rock/Pop Artist and also took home an award for best DVD, "MTV Unplugged - Live from the Hotel Atlantic." Lindenberg had won an Echo 20 years ago for his life work.

Rammstein, meanwhile, was awarded the prize for the most successful German act abroad and was also recognized as the best alternative band. American shock-rocker Marilyn Manson played during the ceremony with the internationally recognized heavy metal group, which has been recording since the 1990s.

The award for Best National Rock/Pop Group went to the duo Rosenstolz, who did not attend the ceremony. The front man of the Cologne-based rock band BAP, Wolfgang Niedecken, received a lifetime achievement award.
