Pope Benedict causes controversy by saying condoms could make Africa's HIV-AIDS problem worse

Janine RabeMarch 18, 2009

Pope Benedict XVI has denounced the use of condoms as a means of combating AIDs in Africa. On his first official papal trip to the continent, the Pope said neither money nor the distribution of condoms would overcome the disease, which has ravaged sub-Saharan Africa more severely than any other region of the world. Pope Benedict began his trip in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, and is due to travel on to Angola on Friday.
