Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked the European Union to send peacekeepers to the Middle East and to help organize elections in the Palestinian territories. Speaking before the EU Parliament today, Abbas called for Europe to ensure that what he called the "unjust siege" of Gaza by Israel be lifted. Abbas said he would continue to strive towards national reconciliation between his moderate Fatah group and Hamas, which controls Gaza.
