Germany's former defence minister Jung defends his role following a controversial airstrike in Afghanistan

Constanze TressNovember 26, 2009

Germany's former Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung has been denying responsibility for an alleged cover-up of civilian casualities in an airstrike in Afghanistan ordered by the Bundeswehr. Jung told parliament that while in office, he had not been given any information about civilian deaths. The current Defense Minister, Karl Theordor zu Guttenberg earlier confirmed that the military leadership had withheld information about the airstrike - and responded by demanding the resignations of both Germany's top general and a high-ranking defense ministry official.
