German tennis player Julia Görges delighted her home crowd with the shock victory over number one ranked female player Caroline Wozniacki in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix on Sunday.
Görges, previously ranked 32nd in the world, is the first German to win the title since Anke Huber in 1996.
The 22-year-old, from the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, clinched the first set of the final in Stuttgart after a tiebreak.
She upped the pressure in the second, breaking her Danish opponent's serve in the second game to win the set 6-3 and claim the most important title of her career so far.
"It's a dream come true," said Görges. "Beating the number one, in a final, in Germany, it can't get any better. I am very proud."
"I don't quite know how I did it," she said. "Against Caroline it feels like you always have a mountain to climb and I did it."
Wozniacki had been bidding for her fourth title so far this year - and the 16th of her career - in the clay court tournament.
Görges won the 2010 Bad Gastein trophy in Austria, but the latest win - in one of the World Tennis Association's premier events - ranks as her most important.
The player received 76,200 euros ($111,000) and a Porsche sports car, moving up to 27th place in the world rankings.
