G8 summit among the ruins - Residents of L'Aquila struggle to rebuild their lives

Constanze TressJuly 8, 2009

Leaders of the industrialized world and emerging economies are meeting in Italy to tackle a number of global issues from climate change to world hunger. But the global financial crisis will still take center stage. Among other topics, the participants are likely to talk about "exit strategies" from stimulus packages, once their economies have recovered. More than 30 world leaders are taking part in the discussions, which are spread over three days. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, has chosen the town of L'aquila as the meeting's venue. Less than 100 days ago, L'aquila was largely destroyed by a powerful earthquake that killed more than 150 people. Observers say that the summit venue is a fitting location for talks on the crumpled global economy that has yet to recover. But the residents of L'aquila feel differently as they struggle to rebuild their lives.
