European Golf victory

European golfers emerged victorious in one of the most prestigeous international tournaments. They beat the United States to win the Ryder Cup.

The European golfers managed a dramatic comeback and beat the United States to win the Ryder Cup by 14-1/2 points to 13-1/2 on Sunday.

They needed to claim eight points in the concluding singles round to retain the trophy. Europe won six of the first eight encounters before Germany's Martin Kaymer secured the vital point to retain the Cup by beating Steve Stricker one up.

 "This is indescribable. I was so nervous in the last two or three holes. Now I know how it really feels to win the Ryder Cup," Kaymer said after the tournament that was held in Medinah, Illinois.

The Ryder Cup golf competition, which is officially called the Ryder Cup Matches, take place every two years between teams from Europe and the United States, alternating between golf links in the United States and Europe.

The tournament draws thousands of spectators and earns the host country millions of euros in TV and sponsorship deals.

The players receive no prize money.
