Dortmund and Leverkusen win

Dortmund have never started a European campaign so successfully, and with that in mind Jürgen Klopp's side had the chance to forget the fact that their Bundesliga start has also been historically poor. In the early stages against Galatasaray though, the visitors from Turkey frustrated Dortmund.

Wesley Sneijder saw a spectacular bicycle kick saved by Roman Weidenfeller before Sokratis nearly rewarded Dortmund for their patience, but his header hit the bar from the corner.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan combined well with Shinji Kagawa, but the latter fired wide before Marco Reus broke the deadlock. Lukasz Piszczek played a superb pass through both the midfield and the defense to the on-rushing Reus, who finished it first time past Fernando Muslera.

Fans disrupt display

Having taken a deserved lead into the break, Dortmund were handed another break midway through the second half, but it was far from a welcome one. The visiting fans started throwing flares and fireworks on the pitch and the match was briefly interrupted as the Galatasaray players spoke to their fans and asked them to stop.

Klopp's side responded to the distraction in the best possible way by doubling their lead from the corner that had been interrupted. Kehl won the header and Sokratis turned the ball home from close range to set Dortmund on their way to a fourth consecutive victory in the Champions League.

But with just over 20 minutes to play, Dortmund conceded their first goal in Europe this season as Hakan Balta headed in from a corner. Just as things looked like they might get a little nerve-wracking for Dortmund, Klopp brought on Ciro Immobile.

The Italian finished off a swift counterattack with a committed finish to restore the home side's two-goal cushion, and the Italian set-up Dortmund's fourth too - his low cross was turned in by Galatasaray defender Semih Kaya. Shortly before the end, more flares and fireworks caused another disruption to the game, with Klopp furious that the referee played four minutes of added time when the situation in the stands appeared to be escalating.

Super Son seals success

In the other Tuesday night game, Zenit St. Petersburg started well against Bayer Leverkusen. The hosts were the better side in the first half as Leverkusen, after a positive opening, looked more and more like the team that were hampered by Hamburg last weekend. With the support of a raucous home crowd, Zenit had the better chances.

Hulk's deep-lying free kick evaded everyone and hit the post as Leverkusen escaped from conceding an early goal. Then Aleksandr Kerzhakov had two good chances to put the home side ahead. Leno kept out his one-on-one effort, before the striker got around the goalkeeper only to be shoot into the side netting.

Cluttered by a high number of fouls, Schmidt's men struggled to find their fluid form and were pleased to find the scores level at the break.

Super Son seals success

The second half nearly started in perfect fashion for Leverkusen, but Heung-min Son chose to shoot rather than pass and soon the game was drifting again. Emir Spahic made two pivotal challenges in the second half to deny Kerzhakov, before Son made ammends on his earlier missed opportunity.

Hakan Calhanoglu took the free kick short to Bellarabi, who was running towards his teammate. The Germany winger layed it off for Son who curled in a spectacular first-time effort to put Leverkusen ahead just before the 70-minute mark. Spurred on by their opener, Leverkusen soon found a second. Son showed his pace and held off the attention of Zenit's defenders to fire low past Juri Lodygin and double Leverkusen's lead.

Zenit substitute Jose Salomon Rondon fired in a goal with only two minutes remaining after neat work outside the box to make for a nervous finale, but Leverkusen held on. The three points sees Leverkusen take a commanding step towards the top of Group C after four games, and place one foot in the knockout rounds.

Elsewhere in Europe

Despite a brace from Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Anderlecht. Karim Benzema's goal was enough to beat a weakened Liverpool side, and Basel dismantled Ludogorets 4-0 in the Group B's other game.

Juventus are struggling in Europe this year, but they edged a thrilling home game against Olympiakos 3-2 - Andrea Pirlo scored a sumptuous free kick on his 100th Champions League appearance. Benfica beat Monaco 1-0, while Atletico Madrid battled to a 2-0 win away against Malmo.
