Deutsch-Test für Österreich (DTÖ)

The Deutsch-Test für Österreich lets you demonstrate your language knowledge at the A2 and B1 levels. The DTÖ is the language component of the Austrian Integrationsprüfung B1.

General Information

Level: A2 and B1

The DTÖ is a scaled exam that tests both knowledge levels.

Target group: Individuals 14 years of age and older

Among other things, recognized in Austria:

  • For module 2 of the Integration Agreement (B1)
  • To apply for Austrian citizenship (B1)
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for very highly qualified individuals (10 points for A2 knowledge)
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for skilled workers in shortage occupations (10 points for A2 knowledge, 15 points for B1 knowledge)
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for key workers in a company (10 points for A2 knowledge, 15 points for B1 knowledge)
  • For a Red-White-Red Card for Start-up founders (5 points for A2 knowledge, 10 points for B1 knowledge)
  • To prove German knowledge at the A2 and B1 levels

A DTÖ certificate with a B1 result is also recognized in Germany. Contact relevant local authorities to confirm under which conditions the certificate is accepted.

Examination structure

Examination sections and duration:

Written examination:

  • Listening (25 minutes) and Reading (45 minutes)
  • Writing (30 minutes)

The Integrationsprüfung B1 also includes an additional written examination section that tests basic knowledge of life in Austria, as well as social values. This section lasts 40 minutes. Information on this section, a catalogue of questions and model tests are available for download here.

Oral examination:

  • Speaking (15 minutes, typically in pairs)

The written and oral examinations are usually administered on the same day. After the written section there is a break of at least 15 minutes. This is then followed by the oral examination.

The oral examination does not include preparation time. It can also be administered as a solo examination, in which case it is a bit shorter than the examination in pairs.

Information about examination results

To pass the examination:

  • All sections of the examination must be completed.


A2 Level:

  • The minimum total possible points for A2 must be achieved in the Speaking section and at least one other section (either Listening and Reading or Writing)
  • Listening and Reading: A total of at least 20 out of 45 points
  • Writing: At least 7 out of 20 points
  • Speaking: At least 35 out of 100 points


B1 Level:

  • The minimum total possible points for B1 must be achieved in the Speaking section and at least one other section (either Listening and Reading or Writing)
  • Listening and Reading: A total of at least 33 out of 45 points
  • Writing: At least 15 out of 20 points
  • Speaking: At least 75 out of 100 points

If you want to take the Integrationsprüfung B1, you must also achieve at least 25 out of 45 points on the questions covering basic knowledge and values.


Receiving examination results

  • Within 15 working days

In urgent cases, an official agency can inquire directly with the ÖIF for the results.

 

Certificate validity: unlimited until repealed

The test, and in particular the Integrationsprüfung B1, adheres to regulations in the Austrian Integration Law. Should these regulations change, it is possible that the certificate may no longer be accepted.

If you took the examination a few years ago, you should inquire with the authority or institution where you intend to submit your examination results. In certain cases older certificates may not be accepted.

Retaking the examination:

  • You may retake the examination as many times as you like.
  • You must always retake the entire exam.
