The German Chancellor has been holding last-minute talks with the French President before the summit. In brief statements in Paris both leaders made conciliatory gestures, with Francois Hollande indicating he was ready to discuss further integration and Angela Merkel hailing measures to promote eurozone growth. Merkel said the Brussels summit would be "of very great importance for the future of Europe".
