In the second round of the French Open on Wednesday, defending champion and world number one Serena Williams was quickly dispatched by 35th-ranked Garbine Muguruza. The Spanish player beat Williams in less than an hour in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-2.

Earlier in the day, Williams's sister Venus was also eliminated from the tournament by Slovakian teenager Anna Schmiedlova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The upset by Muguruza is the latest in what is shaping up to be a very surprising French Open in Paris. January's Australian Open champ, Li Na, was eliminated in the first round on the women's side.
