Military service is mandatory for all Jewish Israelis over the age of 18. Avner Gzaryahu served in the Israeli Defence Forces from 2004 to 2007. Now he's an activist with Breaking The Silence - an organisation which exists to allow Israeli military veterans to "expose the Israeli public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories."
