A bomb blast at New Delhi High Court killed 10 people and injured at least 75 on Wednesday morning, Indian Home Secretary R.K. Singh told CNN-IBN.

The explosion took place shortly after 10 am local time.

Special Police Commissioner Dharmendra Kumar told reporters that the bomb had apparently been placed in a briefcase next to the reception at one of the court's main gates.

Television images showed scores of lawyers in black coats running from the gate. The area around the court, which is not far from parliament and the prime minister's office, was cordoned off by police.

Dozens of wounded were taken to a nearby government hospital.

The Indian authorities said the outlawed Harkat-ul-Jihad Islami (HUJI) militant group had sent an email claiming responsibility. The Islamist militant group has been linked to previous attacks on Indian soil.

In the email, HUJI reportedly called on India to repeal the death sentence of a man convicted in connection with an attack on the Indian parliament in 2001.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, currently on a visit to Bangladesh, condemned the attack and said India would not be cowed by terrorism.
