Top US firms such as Ford, GM or Chrysler are struggling to a large extent because they are still producing cars that are too big, too heavy, and guzzle too much gasoline. European auto makers on the other hand have been focusing increasingly on small, fuel-efficient vehicles. BMW has been testing its smallest car on some of America's major highways.
