Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to three years in prison Saturday, along with his two sons. Mubarak was also fined. The court did not specify if it will count the time he has already served since being arrested months after the popular 2011 uprising that toppled him.

Called the "presidential palaces" affair by the Egyptian media, the charges against Mubarak held that he and his sons embezzled millions of dollars' worth of public money for more than ten years. Instead of using the funds for their stated purpose, to renovate and maintain presidential palaces, the trio allegedly spent the money upgrading the family's private homes.

Mubarak was sentenced in the same courtroom outside of Cairo where his successor, the deposed Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, was given a 20-year prison sentence last month for inciting violence.
