Augsburg - A Visit to the World's Oldest Social Housing Project

In the middle of Augsburg there's a walled enclave called the Fuggerei, which is the world's oldest estate designed to house the needy in dignity. About 150 people live in the complex. An apartment costs just 88 cents a year in rent, excluding heating charges.

The Fuggerei was founded in 1521 by Jakob Fugger, at the time Europe's wealthiest entrepreneur, as a charitable institution for the poor. Nowadays it's the favorite tourist destination in Augsburg.

Frisia - Cycling in Wide-open Spaces

The Tour de Fries is a bicycling route that leads through Frisia, or Friesland as it's called in German, on the North Sea. Wilhelmshaven is a popular starting point. The 250 kilometers covered by the tour can be divided over five or six days. On the way, cyclists pedal through enchanting scenery and historically interesting villages and past a romantic moated palace.
