The Ruhr River was once among Germany's dirtiest commercial waterways. Today, only the last 12 kilometers of the river are used to transport goods. But the Ruhr's water quality has improved over the years, and it has become a popular recreational spot. We accompanied 25 adventure-seekers on an exciting canoe trip between the organic farm Ohler Mühle and the town of Schwerte.
In a region where former mines have become cultural landmarks, it's no wonder that the dumps once used to store extra rock at the mines have also found a new purpose. One such location is hosting an art installation - and these elevated sites also feature panoramic views of the landscape. We'll cycle from one former dump to the next and get to know the underground spaces at the Hannover Coal Mine.
