The Container King - Germany's Biggest Freight Ship
The “Vela” is one of the biggest freight ships in the world. The super-carrier shuttles back and forth between Europe and Asia and can carry around 11,000 containers. No freight ship sailing under the German flag can carry more. Everything about this vessel is enormous: it's more than 300 meters long and 45 meters wide, with a draught of up to 15.5 meters. This means that the Vela can only call at the world’s biggest ports and only when the tides are right. The super-freighter's voyage from Southampton to its home port Hamburg is a trip calculated and monitored by high-precision instruments.
