The project initiated by the Cologne customs office is no easy job. Teams of customs officers regularly conduct checks at large building sites.

6,400 officers are employed to route out illegal workers and employers paying under minimum wage. The construction industry is notorious for abusing labor laws. Carmen Meyer witnessed a raid on a building site near Cologne.

The Netherlands - German workers in demand

40 000 jobs are up for grabs, but not in Germany. You have to cross the border into Holland to find them. 15 000 people from the Kleve region are already working in Holland and that number is set to rise. But many people shy away from taking jobs in other countries.

Advisers from EURES are on hand to help. The EU project was formed to fill cross-border job vacancies and advise applicants. Hagen Tober.

The recovery of mechanical engineering

Thanks to growing demands for exports, the German economy is growing faster than expected. The financial crisis hit the mechanical engineering branch especially hard, but production is now back up to 2006 levels.

The area around Gosheim near Stuttgart was badly affected by the economic downturn. Three quarters of businesses in the sector put their workers on reduced hours. But the situation was completely transformed within a matter of months and the branch is booming again. report by Marion Hütter.

Meiner-Verlag – A philosophical business

Meiner is a family-run publishing house based in Hamburg. It specializes in books on eastern philosphy. The business was founded in 1911. Manfred Meiner is a third generation company director.

Meiner has also published works by Kant, Hegel and Spinoza. Money has never been a key factor for Manfred Meiner. He took over the business from his father due to his love of books. A report by Ute Schneider.
