Micronesia: Futile Fight against Submersion

They produce few CO2 emissions, but are suffering most from the effects of climate change. Island republics in the southern Pacific like the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia are faced with rising sea levels, disappearing coastlines and -- perhaps most disturbing -- a growing lack of fresh water.

The rest of the world, however, hardly seems to notice. A race against time has now begun in the midst of 'paradise'.

What can be done to prevent the corals in the region's more than 870 reefs from dying out? And how can the inhabitants stop coastal erosion on around 1,200 islands?

Global Living Room: India

The Baria family live in a village in the Goraj region of the northern Indian state of Gujarat.

The father of the family works at the nearby Muni Seva Ashram. The center takes care of the sick, the elderly, the disabled and children from disadvantaged families. It also farms the land using sustainable methods, and Mr. Baria's primary job is to take care of the animals.

Rescue Center for Smuggled Animals

Despite international agreements and import bans, the illegal international trade in wild animals continues apace. The lucrative business is threatening to push entire species into extinction. A large number of the animals actually die on the long transit routes, while in other cases mothers are killed specifically so as to get to the infants that are easier to sell.

But what happens to illegally smuggled animals that are discovered and confiscated? For a number of years now, there's been a special animal station in Peru, located out in the Amazon jungle.

It was set up by a woman from Austria. She acted on her own initiative, without the support of the Peruvian government. But now all the animals discovered by the Peruvian authorities are brought to her.

South Africa's "Grannies" Get into Football Fever

With less than two months to go before the soccer World Cup kicks off in South Africa, football fever is spreading across the country. But there's one team that's been hitting the headlines for a very different reason.

The "Vakhegula" or literally "Grannies" club in South Africa's Limpopo Province takes the sport very seriously. All the squad members are older women from rural areas who began playing to improve their health.

The idea first developed in a local hospital. The aim was to help the women counter problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. But few imagined it would end up as such a success.
