From the western perspective, former East Germany was the “wild east”, with rich potential beckoning to the adventurous. Western males went out on the prowl for eastern female partners, others came in search of business opportunities and to check up on their investments. And many got a nasty shock when they found tumbledown ruins that had little to do with the rosy pictures painted by real estate agents. All too often, they had thrown their money down the drain. Billions in state and private money had been invested, and too often in vain. There was talk of the bottomless eastern pit.
