Legendary, steeped in history, and relaxing … The Harz Mountains: There are lots of reasons to visit the hill country in the heart of Germany.

Topics

Romantic roads taking the visitor through some of Germany's most historical cities and countryside. Medieval myths and legends that literally come to life during traditional festivals and rituals. And a winter sportsman's paradise. Is this the Alps? Not this time 'round! We're off to the Harz: A mountain range that stretches across three German states -- Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thüringen. Just two and a half hours by car from both Hamburg and Berlin, this enchanted woodland area is worth a visit in any season.

Susanne Lenz-Schmidt lives in Bad Grund, a centuries-old spa town on the western edge of the Harz. A true native, Susanne has a soft-spot for caves and she works in one of the most famous ones. But caves aren't all that Susanne wants you to see when you visit 'her Harz'. She introduces us to a 3,000-year-old Bronze Age family (they've taken up residence in a local museum), a botanic garden and some authentic Harz cuisine.

So you want food? You want to wash it down with a little Bavarian beer and history? We've got the tour for you: It's time to head to Munich where we will take a special tour of the Vitualien Market. There you'll find everything to satisfy even the most discerning gourmet. Two centuries ago, merchants mostly sold typical Bavarian products at this outdoor market, but over the years it has evolved into a true Epicurean's dream. Even the top chefs in Munich buy their produce here. A perfect place for a culinary expedition ... and a dash of history.

Germany is celebrating a special anniversary this year. It's been almost twenty years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the symbol of the cold war that split East and West Berlin for nearly 3 decades. Sara Davidsson Nymann and Pierre Morel from Sweden were keen to know more about the city's history, so they followed along the path where the wall used to be. But the day they spent in Berlin was rather chilly, so they decided to do it by taxi! Come along for the ride and listen to a taxi-driver-turned-historian tell you what happened.
