The resurrected train route from Paris to Moscow is marketed as a luxury trip from West to East. But those with tickets should be prepared for some surprises.

Topics

Italy - Carpe Diem, Ladies!

While he was still Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi was fond of saying “I love life and I love the ladies“. Following his resignation Italian women are now breathing a collective sigh of relief. For Berlusconi, the female ministers in his cabinet were little more than attractive embellishments.

But now Italy’s new Prime Minister Mario Monti has put an end to the macho way of thinking. It was proving fatal for Italy, which has the lowest birth rate in Europe and the lowest percentage of working women in the European Union. Experts say that the country’s GDP could increase by 16% if women were given a fair chance. And that is exactly what many of them are now hoping to seize.

Bosnia: Villages Cut Off

Bosnia has sub-zero temperatures and masses of snow to deal with. Countless villages remain cut off.

For a moment it looked as though this harsh winter would manage to do what politicians in Bosnia-Herzegovina have failed to: getting all ethnic groups to stand together in the battle against the snow and ice. But that cooperation appears to have been short-lived. The helicopters of the Bosniak-Croat Federation government are no longer being called out across the border in the Serb-dominated semi-autonomous Republika Srpska, where many villages are still snowed in.

Spain: Monarchy Under Pressure

Tough times for Spanish monarchists. The son-in-law of King Juan Carlos is currently on trial, accused of embezzling public funds.

Inaki Urdangarin is accused of embezzling millions of euros. The royal family have distanced themselves from him - albeit after considerable hesitation. At the same time, a new biography about Queen Sofia features a range of details on the alleged affairs of her husband. For his part, King Juan Carlos has recently been making efforts to take the wind out of the sails of anti-monarchy critics with greater transparency as regards his income. According to surveys, however, the royals have slipped to third position among the most respected institutions in Spain.

France: Paris - Moscow

Riding the rails without changing trains, from Paris to Moscow via Berlin. After 17 years, this legendary railroad connection is being revived. People who like sitting in trains will love this. The 3,000-kilometer ride from the Seine to the Moskva takes 38 hours. A plane can cover the distance in just three, but the train offers two deluxe carriages.

What plane can offer a double bed, a bath with shower, comfortable chairs and an en-suite bar? Those unable to afford such luxury have to bunk up instead in a three-passenger couchette compartment.
