There were violent clashes in Athens this week over higher education. Thousands of students and teachers protested against what they say is the commercialization of Greek universities. The protests broke up after police fired tear gas at one group of demonstrators who were pelting them with stones. The protests coincided with a conference organized by the OECD, attended by 30 of the world’s education ministers. Greek students are opposed to plans by the Athens government to create private universities and to overhaul public universities. Malcolm Brabant has the details from Athens.
