Despite regular droughts in Africa, awareness of climate change is still low on the continent

The Special Guest at the opening ceremony of this week’s UN Climate Change Talks here in Bonn, was His Excellency Mr. Kivutha Kibwana, Kenya’s Minister for Environment and Natural Resources. Living Planet's Anja Kueppers spoke to the Minister, and asked him about the challenges Kenya in particular is facing in it’s efforts to reduce emissions. The African continent as a whole stands to gain a huge amount from the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism projects. But to date, there’s been very little investment in CDM projects in Africa. However, Kenya is determined to increase it’s role on the environmental stage – it will be playing host to the UN’s next major climate change summit in November. And real efforts are now being made throughout Africa to make the issue a priority on the continent.
