Streetsign "May-Ayim-Ufer" in Berlin-Kreuzberg with cheering crowd

Berlin street 'Groebenufer' is now called 'May-Ayim-Ufer'

One hundred and twenty five years ago Germany's Chancellor Bismarck invited the European colonial powers plus Turkey and the United States to the Berlin Conference to divide up Africa. After which the so-called "scramble for Africa" began. Compared to other nations like France, Spain or Britain, Germany only had comparatively few colonies, including Namibia, Togo or Tanganika, which it held for a relatively short span of time - about 30 years. But grassroots initiatives are now seeking symbolic reparations for the victims of Germany's colonial past: Last weekend, they renamed a street in the German capital.
