Director General Erik Bettermann: Deutsche Welle is “important for transatlantic relations”.
Miodrag Soric
Deutsche Welle Director General Erik Bettermann introduced Miodrag Soric as the new Head of Studio Washington on Tuesday, November 3. The former Editor in Chief for online and radio takes over for Rüdiger Lentz who had been in charge since 1998. Lentz will take on a new role developing and managing the German-American Heritage Center.
Bettermann thanked Lentz for his many years of service and commitment and wished Soric the best of luck in his new role. “Deutsche Welle has an important role when it comes to transatlantic relations,” said Bettermann. “Our studio in the capital guarantees comprehensive reporting on US politics from a German perspective.” Bettermann pointed out that DW’s journalistic portfolio is available via several different partner stations and websites and went on to say that for those seeking information in the USA, DW offers “access to Germany and Europe”.
Soric was Editor in Chief at DW from 2002 to July 2009, most recently in charge of the consolidated radio and online departments. He studied Slavic, political science and German literature at universities in Cologne, Kiev, Moscow and Munich. After finishing a traineeship at Deutsche Welle in 1989, he worked in radio covering politics and business before moving on to become the program adviser to the Director General in 1993 and Head of the Russian Service in 1995. Three years later he took over as Head of the Central and Eastern Europe Service.
Lentz had been the television correspondent for Deutsche Welle since 1998. Prior to taking over at Studio Washington, Lentz worked as a European correspondent based in Brussels. Before coming to DW, he worked for the German news magazine “Spiegel” and as an chief editor and commentator at WDR. He was also the Editor in Chief at RIAS-TV in Berlin, as well as being their Washington correspondent between 1988 and 1991.
